Version Control

By Deane Barker

The process by which more than one editor is able to work (or be prevented from working) on the same content at the same time without disrupting other editors. Version control might incorporate any or all of the following:

  • A warning that other editors are working on a specific content object
  • The ability to “lock” a content object from editing by others
  • Conflict resolution or merge capability to reconcile two different versions of a content object
  • Co-editing functionality allowing editing by more than one editor at the same time

Version control and versioning are often confused and used interchangeably.
