Zebroid

By Deane Barker

This is not what I originally looked up – I orginally wanted details on what a “Zorse” was (see below for why I looked this up), but I was introduced to the world of zera-equine hybrids.

A “zebroid” is the product of a zebra and any other equine except another zebra – so, anything else that a zebra can create offspring with. The name for these are lengthy:

  • Zorse: male zebra + female horse, also called a zerbose, zebrula or zebrule
  • Hebra: female zerba + male horse, also called a horsebra or zebrinny
  • Zony: male zebra + female pony (defined as a genetically small horse)
  • Zetland: when the equine is a Shetland pony
  • Zenkey: zebra + donkey

Why I Looked It Up

The NY Times crossword had a clue:

Hybrid equine animal with stripes

The answer was “ZORSE.”
