Carceral

By Deane Barker

Definition: of or pertaining to a prison

Apparently the Latin word for prison is “carcer.” This is where we get the word “incarcerated.”

Why I Looked It Up

I picked this up from context. I found an article headline about the retiring the debt of former prisoners entitled:

How to Cancel $3.2 Million of Debt For 20,000 People Who Went Through the Carceral System

However, I looked it up because I had never seen this form used before.

Interestingly, while searching, I found a website called The Carceral Tech Resistance Network, which are technology professionals who refuse to work on technology in this field.

carceral technologies are tech that are bound up in the control, coercion, capture, and exile of entire categories of people.
