Agitprop

By Deane Barker

This is a portmanteau of the words “agitation” and “propaganda.”

Historically, it has been used for propoganda in support of communism. I couldn’t find a definition that made it clear what the difference was between it and “regular” propoganda. The only thing is that the “agit” part of it tends more toward action – agitprop is designed to spur someone to do something, rather than just believe something.

Why I Looked It Up

A friend was promoting something, and wrote:

…I decided to make some agitprop and post it to LinkedIn.

However, what he posted was basic propoganda – we was trying to get someone to believe his position. He wasn’t trying to spur anyone to action.
