A Claim to Mystery or Faith

By Deane Barker

A claim that the unbeliever simply has to have faith. These are often claimed as benefits or privileges – “only the faithful can understand.” It’s fine to personally believe something on faith, but you can’t automatically accept that other people will believe this as well. Faith is not transferable.

Examples

Clearly, much religion is fundamentally based on faith. “Hope for things we cannot see.” Moreover, the most obvious basis for atheism is this same argument, in the opposite direction.

Many multi-level marketing (MLM) programs encourage blind faith to “the process.” Independent distributors are encouraged to adopt slavish devotion to the system, with the promise that it will pay off if you stick with it long enough.
