Imprecise term which can refer to:

This usage seems to come from the usage of “node” in botany:

The part of a plant stem from which one or more leaves emerge, often forming a slight swelling or knob.

And the corresponding usage in geometry:

A point at which lines or pathways intersect or branch; a central or connecting point.

Two other usages in technology have nothing to do with CMS, but contribute to the ambiguity of the term.

  • A server-side JavaScript framework (more precisely: “Node.js” but colloquially just “Node”)
  • A piece of hardware attached to a network
