Microsoft Releases a Sharepoint-Based Intranet

From Issue #56

Microsoft has released Viva, which is an intranet based on Sharepoint.

Someone of you might be thinking, “Wait, isn’t Sharepoint an intranet?”

No – SharePoint is a raw enterprise content management system that too many organizations just dump on their employees and say, “Hey, here’s your intranet.” Technically, it can be used as an intranet out-of-the-box, but you can also technically live in an empty warehouse and sleep on a concrete floor.

Some vendors have taken advantage of these rough edges to build intranet products on top of Sharepoint (example: Akumina), but now Microsoft itself is taking that leap. No telling how this will affect that market segment.
