I’ll Be There for You: The One about Friends
A lovely look back at my favorite TV show. It’s a comprehensive history of before it started, it’s entire run, and what’s happened since. It makes the point that Friends is about a period of time in every adult’s life, and how the heady uncertainty of that time in our lives makes this emotional comfort food.
Unexpected: the book spends a lot of time on the social justice aspects of the show. It looks at the gay jokes, trans jokes (Chandler’s father…), lack of diversity, etc. from the lens of today, and how things have changed. I’m certainly not against this, but it’s a huge, ever-present component of the book, and perhaps deserved a mention in the subtitle.
