Body of Work: Finding the Thread that Ties Your Career Together

I think I loved the idea of this book more than the reality of it. She presents a really intriguing concept – consider your entire professional history together as your “body of work” rather than individual jobs.

However, the result is scattered. There are flashes of brilliance toward her topic, but the next minute she’s giving you advice on PowerPoint. She careens back and forth between large-scale, philosophical concepts (what I was looking for) and minutiae (how not to compose an email requesting hyperlink reciprocation).

Some of the exercises are good, and even if I didn’t love the result, she did get me thinking critically about the topic, which is good. I’m still thinking about it after I’ve finished the book, and just the introduction of the concept may have permanently flavored how I view my career.

A mixed bag.
