This is the proper name for the main square of Mexico City. It has become a common name for the center square of many Mexican cities.

It’s Spanish for plinth, as the base for a monument to independence was originally built in this location.

Why I Looked It Up

The main commerce area of Babylon 5 is called “The Zocalo.” I got to wondering if it had an actual definition or was just a made up word.

This is a big, sculpted stone, onto which you would put a smaller sculpture or bust. It’s often used in the context of ancient architecture, but you can buy plinths at many home improvement stores .
