Refusenik

This is a colloquial name given to people who were denied permission to leave the Soviet Union and had to remain living there against their wishes. Many were Jews who wanted to move to Israel (this was finally allowed in the 1970s).

Why I Looked It Up

I can’t remember. It came up in a book I was reading. (It might have been Soldiers Of Reason, but I’m not sure.)
