Jutland

By Deane Barker

This is the peninsula that extends into the Baltic Sea on the northern coast of Germany. Most of it forms the mainland of Denmark, and there is some debate about how far south it extends. Some consider “Southern Jutland” to extend down into Germany and encompass the major city of Hamburg.

Jutland is one of the three major land masses of Denmark, along with the islands of Funen and Zealand. The largest Danish city in Jutland is Aarhus.

I was talking with a friend who lives in Copenhagen about cultural differences, and he said this:

There is classic hate between Zealand and Jutland. Everybody likes those from Funen, their dialect makes them sound friendly and trustworthy. North Jutland are the hillbillies and fishermen. People from Aarhus pretend to be real city people, but are mostly crazy (entire category of jokes about people from Aarhus)

Jutlandic people expect everybody from Zealand to be snobby urban people and woke hipsters

People in Jutland tend to be more religious. And conservative religious. Jehovah’s Witnesses are pretty common in western Jutland countryside. Even in the regular Lutheran state churches there, you will find priests who will not shake hands with females, won’t perform gay marriages, or marriage of people who have been married before.

Why I Looked It Up

I encountered it several times in The LEGO Story. Also, I’ve privately called this the “thumb of Germany,” due to its appearance, and I often use it to orient myself on a map of Europe.
