This is a trend of documenting the items that someone carries on their person every day to be prepared for situations that might arise.

The concept of carrying a specific set of items every day isn’t new, of course, but there’s a burgeoning trend of documenting and celebrating this. An ecosystem of publications and vendors have emerged to provide advice and products to this subculture.

The subculture seems to be distantly related to “prepping” – people who are prepared for some kind of mass extinction event or the breakdown of society.

Why I Looked It Up

In It's Good to Be a Man this was singled out as a predominantly male pastime. I thought it had something to do with firearms, but it turns out to be mainly about utility items.

I was unaware there was a name for this.
