This is related to a couple other words: convince and invincible. They come from the Latin root which means “to vanquish” or “to win” (as in, win an argument).

Why I Looked It Up

From a NY Times article about gun control in New York:

This dispute envinces a larger rift between Democratic lawmakers in Albany – heavily represented by downstate liberals – and more conservative law enforcement and elected official upstate.

So, the dispute it acts as evidence of a larger conflict.
