This comes from “beget,” which means “something that creates something else.”

Example: “violence just begets more violence.”

Why I Looked It Up

The most common usage is John 3:16 from the King James Version:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

In this context, it makes the point that Jesus was specifically a creation of God.

Other translations, however, don’t use the word. For instance, the New International Version:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…

Revised Standard Version:

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…

International Standard Version:

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his uniquely existing Son…
