The Myth of the Transformational Leader

By Deane Barker

We often believe that an organization simply lacks leadership, and a single person will come in, take charge, and lead the organization out of the darkness. In doing so, we discount the intractability of some problems, and the resistance of the group members to change. We believe that all the members of the group will simply line up behind the leader and perform as expected. We discount the skill and competence of the group members, who might be performing well, but the combination of different agendas and personal styles will cause friction no matter who is in charge.
