Where have all the small projects gone?

I enjoyed this essay about how the authors feels that smaller web projects are drying up.

The Elephant in the Room

There’s very few freelancers that I know of, making the same living that they were making 3+ years ago. Conferences that were once a staple part of every web designers calendar, have disappeared and no one from “the old days” can quite put their finger on why the web industry feels different.

The author says that companies are bringing work internal, but I’m wondering if the template-friendly sites like Squarespace, Wix, Duda, and WordPress are just making it easy to build a simple website, and that’s slowly chewing up the lower end of the market.

Every day, between 7,000 and 10,000 unique visitors come to this website. I don't keep analytics, so I have no idea why you're here. Maybe get in touch with me and tell me why you visited today?
