James River, named for Jacques D’Englis, had two ferries, the lower established by John Stanage, a soldier, who had been at Ft. Pierre, in 1859, was on the Sioux City-Ft. Randall Military Road. Stanage was named Postmaster at James River P.O. on 13 March 1861. He stood off the Indians on 6 September 1862 and the chicken coop, still standing, has bullet holes to prove it.
