On May 8, 1833, the American Fur Co. steamer Yellowstone stopped on the river bank to the south and put Francois LeRoi ashore to set up a fur post which remained as such until 1851. In 1845, James Emmett led a party of 200 Mormons west from Nauvoo, Illinois and they wintered 1845-46 at Fort Vermillion.
