This book scratched an itch I’ve had for a long time. A friend referred to it as “activity over intimacy,” and Jethani captures this by identifying four ways of relating to god, and why they’re flawed:
Life From God: Wanting the benefits that come from God without the work.
Life Over God: Maintaining a relationship with God in name only, why living independently.
Life For God: Depending on God for determining your entire purpose in life.
Life Under God: Trying to please God with your lifestyle.
Jethani identifies another way: Life with God, which he identifies as walking with God – achieving intimacy over activity.
Later in the book, he falls into some cliches and assumption, as if the reader knows what he’s talking about. But there’s an appendix on spiritual practices that I found helpful.

Reread this again, though I’m not sure why. But I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time. There’s a lot in here that will resonate with you, no matter where you are in your faith journey.
It’s fundamentally about the motivations we have for our relationship with God. The “from, over, for, and under” postures are not as important as the “with” posture.
It’s a lovely read.
