The Book of Strange New Things

Book review by Deane Barker tags: fiction, science-fiction

I don’t know where to go with this one. I read it on a recommendation from a friend.

It’s…religious science fiction? Is that a thing? The basic idea is that a pastor goes to another planet to try to convert an alien race to Christianity.

The author has no history of Christian writing (I don’t think, anyway) so there’s clearly some larger intention to the faith perspective of the book. I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone, so let me just say that the book made me think about…what? I don’t know, really. But I was quiet for a couple hours after reading it, and a few days later, I’m still a little confused and thoughtful about it, and perhaps that’s the sign of a good book?

There’s a Big Idea here, I’m just still sifting through it in my head.
