Spy Role-Playing Games

For no other reason than middle-age nostalgia, I asked Claude for a list of “spy-themed role playing games.” It gave me the following:

  • James Bond 007 (Victory Games, 1983). Widely considered the best of the era. Its “Hero Points” let players bend the story in cinematic, Bond-film ways, and it has excellent chase rules.
  • Top Secret/S.I. (TSR, 1987). TSR’s own revision of Top Secret, with a cleaner system and a pulpier, more action-oriented feel.
  • Espionage! (Hero Games, 1983), later revised as Danger International (1985). This is the Champions/Hero System engine applied to spies and mercenaries.
  • Mercenaries, Spies & Private Eyes (Flying Buffalo, 1983). It uses a Tunnels & Trolls-style engine and handles both detective and spy play.
  • Ninjas & Superspies (Palladium, 1988). Gonzo martial arts and gadget-heavy espionage using the Palladium system.

After a couple weeks prowling around eBay — and way too much money spent — I managed to accumulate them all. I won’t play them, I just like reading the rule books.

Give me some time and I’ll do some more analysis. I feel like the commonalities between different systems have some valuable things to say about how we frame spy fiction.
