Should the government have anything to do with marriage?

Dear gays in America: Refocus your efforts to get the government out of marriage : Interesting thoughts here. Makes me wonder why marriage has to be sanctioned by the government, and why we care?
Instead of seeking to make the government completely trash the tradition of marriage in practically every religion on the planet that recognize marriage — and as far as I know the ones that do only recognize it between man and woman — what they should be doing is fighting for the government to get out of the marriage business all together.
[…] If people want to be married in the eyes of their god, so be it. Go do it in a church, but let’s not have the government treat you special now.
I’m not ready to do what this guy suggests, but it makes you think. The thing is, I do care that my marriage is a legally enforceable thing, but I don’t know why. I wish I knew.
I wonder what the die-hard conservative viewpoint on this is? If you want smaller government…

I completely agree (with the quoted bit)… currently marriage is tied to taxes, life insurance, 401(k) beneficiaries, etc, etc which has made marriage a government institution and as such should have the non-discrimination fully apply.
As long as the government is involved, it’s discrimination to arbitrarily decide who can partake of a right (regardless of the religious traditions, which should not be considered relevant to any discussion about the government). It saddens me greatly that even “liberal” states like California have decided that discrimination is a-ok.
Personally I’m fine if you want to call it a “civil union” and have “marriage” be something that happens in a church.
(For what it’s worth… I am a straight married male with a daughter).
