Varying Allegiances

August 29th, 2009

Here’s something curious I’ve discovered about myself – my political allegiance moves in opposition to whomever is in the White House.

When Clinton was there, I got very conservative.  I read both of Limbaugh’s books, and I really became a fairly died-in-the-wool right winger.

Then Bush happened, and he turned me liberal.  He made me regret ever having anything to do with that side of the aisle.  I railed against him non-stop, hated everything he ever did, and was thrilled when his party was voted out.

Now Obama is here, and I find myself becoming more and more conservative…again.  For example, I wanted a comprehensive health care bill…until I’m staring down both barrels of one.  Now I’m not so sure (actually, I am sure I don’t want this one…).

I suspect this means I’m actually somewhere in the middle, so I bounce back and forth.  A new party in the White House makes me hope we’ll settle back towards the middle…but then we go past it and slide too far in the other direction, and I get just as irritated as I was before, just from the other side.

Since I doubt this country will ever see an actual moderate president, I am destined to do this forever, I think.
