John Hughes, Penpal

August 8th, 2009

We’ll Know When We Get There: Sincerely, John Hughes: This is a beautiful story about a penpal relationship between John Hughes (the Brat Pack director who just passed away) and a teenage girl in the 80s;.

Tonight, when I heard the news that John had died, I cried. I cried hard. (And I’m crying again.) I cried for a man who loved his friends, who loved his family, who loved to write and for a man who took the time to make a little girl believe that, if she had something to say, someone would listen.

I read Hughes’ Wikipedia page, and he was an interesting character.  Despite hugely successful films like Vacation, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller, and Home Alone, he quit directing in 1991 at age 41 and moved to the Midwest where he lived in seclusion and farmed.  He was married to his wife Nancy for 39 years.
